An awesome opening ten minutes from the United States of America, systematically pulling New Zealand apart with passing of precision and pace set a benchmark for the rest of the teams in this tournament and gave them the platform for a twelfth successive Olympic win since their group stage defeat to Norway in Qinhuangdao in 2008.
It took wonderkid, Mallory Pugh less than four minutes to make her mark on the world stage, searing down the right flank to force an early corner. From it, Julie Johnstone and Alex Morgan both had close range headers saved by New Zealand keeper, Erin Nayler. Morgan then headed Heath’s free kick over.
